What is the name of the angel statue in Central Park, NY?
This is the angel statue with a fountain around it – I went to New York and our guide told us it was really the only statue that was in the original plans for the park. It is the most famous one that appears in the film Home Alone also I think.
The angel of the waters at Bethesda Fountain. Bethesda Source: C72 – The angel of the waters [Unveiled 1873] Sculpted: 1868 Sculptor: Emma Stebbins 1815-1882 • U.S. Gift of New York, the jewel in the crown end of Central Park, is one of the most famous and universally loved fountains in the world, Bethesda Fountain. Designed by Emma Stebbins, the centerpiece of the "angel of the waters" was the only sculpture created as part of the original design of the park names in the first woman to receive a commission for a great work of art in New York. Located on the lower level of Bethesda Terrace, this neoclassical winged male figure symbolizes and celebrates the purification of city water where the Croton Aqueduct opened in 1842, bringing water to all New Yorkers. For this reason, it carries a lily, symbol of purity in one hand while the other hand extends out as he blesses the water below. The revival of the idea of "Angel of the Waters" comes from the Gospel – John chapter 5, the history a power of healing angel overlooking the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. Below eight foot gilded bronze statue are four legs four figures symbolizing temperance, purity, health and peace. The basis of the source was designed by Calvert Vaux with detail work by Jacob Wrey mold.
