how to safely clean painted cast iron bookends of age or doorstops?

I have many antique iron, and I I know them too clean or repaint "ruins" of value. I heard a stick of cotton and oil is good for wiping gently with him, but then how get the oil so that not only meet more dust? I also heard Avoid soap and water is important, or more of the original painting has been lost and the Part oxidized. However, some of them seem only to have decades of dust, soil hardened by moisture, which is called "antique patina old. How to safely clean these parts?

I use compressed air, brushes, makeup brushes and vacuuming soft. I collect both wrought and iron castings, some of which still stands outside in the garden. I do not recommend the oil because it is almost impossible to get out more ornate pieces and only continue to attract dirt. Similarly, "wash" some of my rooms with waterless cleanser used by mechanics, which works well to remove grease and evaporates leaving no residue or rust.
