Long Island War: The Battle of Brooklyn

Author: Adam Singleton

Sitting in the State of New York, Long Island – the world's 149th largest island and home to 7.5 million people – is also the scene of the first major battle in the Revolutionary War that followed the Declaration of Independence of the United States. The Battle is also the largest battle in the entire conflict and the first Once a U.S. Army never made in.

In March 1776, George Washington, (who became the first president of the United States) moved his troops to Long Island and New York and pledged to strengthen their defenses in anticipation of an attack by British troops. His intelligence has proven to be accurate, the British on August 22, 1776, 15,000 troops began crossing the Narrrows Brooklyn with Staten Island.

Much of the rebel forces in America were undisciplined, untrained and accustomed to following orders from above, giving their British counterparts, a significant advantage. The British were able to maneuver his troops through the field without protection and then surprised the Americans by his tireless gunshot wounds, column after column to reach the rank of bayonet

The numerical and tactical superiority of the British troops were well treated, the American rebels were severely outnumbered, but willing to die for the cause, and die. After losing hundreds of soldiers in several skirmishes, Washington decided it was time to retire from Brooklyn, while the wind blew in his favor. As the rain lashed down and the fog descended on the region, Washington has used the time to hide his retirement in total silence, nine thousand men, with their ammunition, artillery, food, horses and carriages rowing on the East River. The withdrawal operation was completed in 13 hours and was completed without loss of a man.

When British troops marched to Brooklyn Heights, the next morning, hoping to force the rebels to surrender, or shooting, they found nothing but ration packs a bit empty.

On September 11, 1776, the British accepted the request of a U.S. delegation to discuss a treaty, but the peace conference failed because the Americans refused to revoke the Declaration of Independence. The British troops then continued to move to Long Island, using local homes, farms and even hotels in Westbury, Hempstead, Hicksville, and several other institutions.

The British military historians were later to congratulate Washington on his retirement while his error original estimate had put his army in extreme danger, strong leadership has saved most of his troops, probably massacred had it not been for Washington's quick thinking.
