The flag of Mexico has three stripes. It's green, white and red with an emblem. The overall design and general of the Mexican flag has been the same since 1821, but the flag was adopted in 1968.

The design in the center of the flag is a picture of an eagle holding a snake. The eagle is sitting on a rock near a cactus in a lake. The Aztecs had a legend that the gods had asked them to build a city where they saw an eagle with a snake. The legend says that it is the city that became what is now Mexico City.

When originally created, the colors represented green for independence from Spain. The color White represents the religion of Catholicism is prominent in Mexico. The color red is used to represent the union of the Americas and Europe. Meanings change over time and the definition of the flag to avoid the problem by assigning no meaning for the colors. In general, colors are now believed to be green to represent hope. The color white is considered as representing the unity or purity. The red color reminds people of the religion or the blood of heroes. Notice how the Religion has been changed from white to red and not specific to the Roman Catholic Church.

Until 1968 Mexico had used the tricolor flag without the emblem for many applications. However, when it hosted the summer Olympics in 1968, which was a problem. The flag was used in many ways identical to the Italian flag. With the large number of people visiting summer Olympics, this would not look good and could have caused much confusion. To avoid confusion in the current definition was adopted which requires the eagle emblem.

In 1995, the legal description of the Mexican flag was changed once again. This indicates that the eagle facing left. At first it seems simple, but not realize what happens when the flag is viewed from behind. This may have been a simple OverSite in the haste to get the flag changed before the Olympics or perhaps originally the flag to be correctly printed on both sides. The definition does not allow flag the rear to allow the eagle to face right instead of left as it is in the front of the pavilion. I'm not sure how people are prevented from seeing the back of the flag all these years. After the change of 1995, the flag can be officially viewed from the front and back.
